"Where your nightmares end..."

Eraserhead is a surrealist film done entirely in black and white. Director David Lynch creates a world in this film that is horrifyingly askew to the viewer. Henry Spencer, the protagonist, finds himself in a difficult situation when his girlfriend, Mary X, has a child. However, the child born looks nothing like a child at all, but instead a swaddled inhuman and underdeveloped fetus with an elongated neck. Despite the deformity, Spencer and Mary X move in together to care for the child. However, when the child's crying becomes overbearing, Mary X leaves Spencer to care for the child alone.

Following Mary X's desertion, Spencer becomes riddled with visions that create the bulk of the surrealism in this film. The visions center around a lady in the radiator, singing an eerie tune in a night lounge setting while stomping on smaller versions of Spencer's child. Another vision involves Spencer's head falling off to reveal a stump underneath, while a child finds Spencer's head and brings it to the eraser factory. The film's climax comes when Spencer finds himself completely controlled by his feelings of lust towards his next door neighbor and his despair for raising a child that grows more abnormal and sickly as the movie progresses.

What sets David Lynch's films apart from others is his ability to create an entire world that is grotesque and off-centered, and yet, no character seems to notice the absurdity of it all; the inspiration for which can be traced back to the works of Franz Kafka and Nikolai Gogol, two historic champions for surrealism. A roasted chicken writhing and spilling blood as it is carved during the dinner scene while Mary X's mother falls into a psychotic trance; a man in the moon sentenced to pull levels for all of eternity; misshapen men and women that populate Spencer's world - These images and many more build the living nightmare that is David Lynch's Eraserhead.
