Young Celestine belongs to the underground world of mice, small creatures who live in constant fear of the bears who inhabit the world above. From an early age they are all taught that bears are ravenous creatures only too eager to gobble them up. All mice know the stories of what happens to those who defy the natural order.

Ernest the bear is down on his luck and fresh from hibernation when he comes upon Celestine asleep in a trashbin. His attempt to eat her is thwarted by Celestine's insistently cheerful personality. The two form an unlikely friendship, but when Celestine brings Ernest down into her home mayhem ensues, and the mismatched pair struggle to find acceptance in either world. Determined to overcome these boundaries, Ernest and Celestine remain true to their hearts.
