Four Days in September

"Their goal: freedom. Their only hope: an international incident. Their target: the American ambassador."

A Brazilian political thriller set in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1960s, Four Days in September is very loosely based on the real life kidnapping of the American Ambassador to Brazil during the unrest of 1969. After a military coup overthrows the democratically elected Brazilian government, Paulo (Pedro Cardoso) an idealistic young student, joins the MR-8, a marxist-leninist revolutionary group dedicated to restoring democracy.

Along with his fellow revolutionaries they make the decision to kidnap the American ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick (Alan Arkin), hoping to negotiate an exchange for fifteen leftist political prisoners. As events unfold the young man forms a friendship with their prisoner, who is somewhat sympathetic to their plans, if not their methods. Paulo also falls in love with the leader of the group, the beautiful Andreia (Fernanda Torres) and experiences doubts as to the actions the group is undertaking.

Directed by Bruno Barreto, one of Brazil's most popular filmmakers.
