From Here to Eternity is a dramatic film based on the James Jones' novel of the same name. It focuses on the challenges faced by three military men stationed on the island of Oahu several months before the Japanese attack the naval station at Pearl Harbor. One of the men is a career soldier by the name of Robert E. Lee Prewitt, a private, bugler and boxing champion who gave up the sport when he accidentally blinded his sparring partner. First Sergeant Milton Warden is the second soldier, who falls into an affair with Captain Holmes' affection-starved wife. The third soldier is Prewitt's best and only friend, Private Angelo Maggio. When a fight breaks out at the club where Prewitt and Maggio spend their off hours, Maggio makes an enemy of a sadistic staff sergeant who later exacts his revenge when Maggio is sentenced to jail time due to being AWOL. In the meantime, Captain Holmes' wife continues to pressure her lover Warden to apply for officer training so he would be a suitable marital partner for her if she divorced the Captain. But when the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor on December 7, everyone's plans and relationships are forever changed.
