Gas Food Lodging

"When Shade's good, she's very good. But when Trudi's bad, she's better."

Based on the novel Don't Look and It Won't Hurt by Richard Peck, Gas Food Lodging is a 1992 independent film set in Laramie, New Mexico. It focuses on the story of a single mother who is raising two teenage daughters in a trailer park while she works to support them as a waitress. The film stars Ione Skye and Fairuza Balk as the daughters, Trudi and Shade. While Shade is an impossible daydreamer that escapes her bleak life while retreating into fantasy at the local movie theater, Trudi is rebellious and makes choices that put her in the path of danger. Gas Food Lodging is primarily a portrayal of the relationship between the sisters and their desperation to escape the small town where they live.

Directed by Allison Anders, the drama debuted at the 42nd Annual Berlin International Film Festival. Fairuza Balk won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Female Lead for her portrayal of Shade.
