Giant of Metropolis is a 1961 Italian science-fiction film that tells the story of a man called Obro, who rises to become a leader and fights to save the city of Metropolis from the evil machinations of the priests who rule over it. Directed by Umberto Scarpelli and written by Emimmo Salvi, it stars Gordon Mitchell as Obro, Bella Cortez as his love interest, and Roldano Lupi as the high priest Numerius.

The film is set in a post-apocalyptic world where the city of Metropolis is ruled by a group of priests who worship the god Uranus. The city is divided into two factions: the ruling priests and the workers who live in poverty and are forced to toil in the uranium mines.

Obro, a brutish miner, becomes enraged when his brother is killed by the priests' guards while trying to escape their tyranny. Obro retaliates by attacking and killing the guard, leading him to be exiled from the city. While wandering the wastelands, he stumbles upon a group of sages who reside in an underground temple. The sages, who represent the last bastion of civilization, study ancient texts and have been searching for a savior to lead them in a revolution against the priests.

Obro is tasked with this mission and is given a serum that transforms him into a giant with superhuman strength. Armed with his newfound powers, he returns to Metropolis and with the help of the sages, he seeks to overthrow the priests and establish a new society.

Along the way, Obro meets the beautiful Ischia (Bella Cortez), the daughter of a merchant who is being forced to marry Numerius. Obro and Ischia quickly fall in love, but their budding romance is threatened by the priests' oppressive regime.

The film's special effects are rudimentary by today's standards, but are impressive for a low-budget film released in 1961. The transformation scene of Obro into a giant is particularly memorable, as is the sequence where he uses his newfound powers to overthrow a massive stone statue.

Giant of Metropolis is a film that is steeped in mythology and allegory. The priests, who are clearly modeled after the ancient Roman Empire, represent the oppressive nature of authority and the dangers of a regime that seeks to suppress freedom in the name of religion. Obro, on the other hand, represents the hero who rises from the ranks of the oppressed to lead a revolution that seeks to establish a new order of democracy and egalitarianism.

The film, while not a commercial success upon its release, has become a cult classic and has influenced many subsequent science-fiction films. Its themes of overthrowing despotic regimes and the struggles of the oppressed against oppression are timeless and are still relevant today.

Overall, Giant of Metropolis is a film that is worth watching for fans of science fiction and fantasy. It may not have the polished special effects of modern films, but it has a charm and an appeal that is hard to resist. The performances of the cast, particularly Gordon Mitchell as Obro, are compelling, and the story has a resonance that will stick with viewers long after the credits have rolled.
