"The music that thrilled the world ... and the killing that stunned it!"

Gimme Shelter is one of the most comprehensive documentaries about the events at the end of the 1969 Rolling Stones tour of their album Let It Bleed, specifically the events leading up to and culminating at the famous Altamonte Free Concert. Starting at the beginning of the tour at Madison Square Garden -- with Ike and Tina Turner opening -- the movie starts to focus more and more on what happened in order to get the Stones to play Altamonte.

The documentary continues, showing us the band and the deal making that goes into having a successful rock and roll act, and finally bringing us to Altamonte itself where plenty of footage is given of the various performers, many of whom were trying to calm an increasingly restless crowd and the Hells Angels who had been hired for security. The film's climax begins from the moment Mick Jagger is punched upon exiting his helicopter, runs through the attempt by the crowd to rush the stage, and stays tense until the eventual tragedy that marked the end of that concert. Directors Albert & David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin use reactive film making to show the audience the action exactly as it unfolded.
