Godzilla vs. Gigan

This film featured the debut of the space monster Gigan, and was the twelfth in the franchise. Originally envisioned as a film pitting three original monsters against three pre-existing beasts, it was eventually whittled down to Gigan and the returning King Ghidorah against Godzilla and Anguirus due to budget constraints. Jun Fukuda directed the film, his third addition to the franchise, with special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano. The Japanese theatrical debut of the movie was in 1972 while the American theatrical release followed in 1978. This was Haruo Nakajima's last time portraying Godzilla.

Godzilla vs. Gigan followed the tried and true alien invasion plot prevalent in so many other films in the franchise. This time giant cockroaches from Space Hunter Nebula M are plotting to wipe out the human race and colonize the earth, as their own planet is dying. They take on human forms and create a peace based theme park as a front. The park, entitled World Children's Land, contains a life sized replica of Godzilla which the aliens use as their base.

From this replica, dubbed Godzilla Tower, the aliens plan to use two Action Signal Tapes to draw King Ghidorah and Gigan to Earth. The tapes emit a special frequency that gives the Nebula M aliens control over the pair of space monsters. However, when manga artist Gengo Kotaka stumbles upon the tapes and accidentally plays it, the signal draws the attention of Godzilla and Anguirus.

Anguirus initially comes to investigate on his own. The Japanese Self Defense Forces mistake his arrival for an attack and drive the monster away. Meanwhile, the aliens enact their plan to summon King Ghidorah and Gigan. The space monsters begin to wreak havoc as Anguirus returns with Godzilla in tow.

While Gengo and his friends try to thwart the aliens from within the tower, a battle ensues outside the tower between the four monsters in a struggle for the fate of the planet.
