Gummo

"Prepare to visit a town you'd never want to call home."

Gummo is a 1997 film that has achieved a cult status since its theatrical release. Harmony Korine wrote and directed the movie. This is Korine's directorial debut and he also appears in the film as a homosexual teenager trying to seduce a black dwarf. Gummo stars Jacob Reynolds as Solomon, Jacob Sewell as Bunny Boy, Nick Sutton as Tummler, and Chloe Sevigny as Dot.

The setting is the fictional town of Xenia, Ohio. The town has been ravaged by a devastating tornado that it has never fully recovered from. A grainy voiced narrator recalls the tornado as home-video like vignettes give the viewer a glimpse of the surreal poor white trash townsfolk. Void of all hope, they are depicted in one disturbing scenario after another with scenes exploring everything from violence, vandalism, prostitution, animal cruelty, satanic rituals, substance abuse, suicide, mental illness, sexism, racism, and euthanasia.

Bonded by their mutual location, the town's people include an albino girl with an affinity for Patrick Swayze, a boy weight training with cutlery to Madonna's "Like A Prayer," a group of drunks initiating a wrestling match against a dinner table and chairs, a pimp selling the services of his Down Syndrome afflicted sister, door-to-door candy salesmen, and a pair of glue sniffers hunting feral cats to be butchered at a local grocer and served at a town restaurant. A gang-like turf war over the cat killing erupts, and the boys proceed to unplug the catatonic grandmother of a rival cat hunter from life support upon breaking into his home.

Solomon eats dinner in a bathtub full of dirty brown bath water and walls decorated with taped bacon.

The film is so jolting to some that numerous people in attendance at the Telluride Film Festival premiere on August 29, 1997 actually left the theater during the cat abuse sequences.
