Holes is a comedy for children that deals with a family that has plain back luck. It is said the family was cursed by a gypsy and every generation since then has been a victim of this bad luck. Stanley is a teenager who was accused of stealing a pair of shoes donated to charity by a famous sports player. He got caught with the shoes when they feel on his. The shoes dropped from the sky and landed on Stanley. He was convicted of stealing them. Stanley's punishment was to serve time at a juvenile detention center called Camp Green Lake. This camp was in the middle of a desert and was anything but fun. The boys at the camp had to dig whiles in the desert everyday to build up their character.

Stanley makes friends with a fellow inmate known as Zero. He teaches Zero to read and gives him company. One day after being insulted by a counselor Zero hits in with a shovel and runs away. Stanley runs away in an attempt to find and save Zero. Stanley finds Zero dehydrated and is able to carry him to a source of water. Stanley finds out that Zero is a descendant of the gypsy that put a curse on this family and is able to break the curs at last. As it turns out Zero was the one who took the shoes Stanley was convicted of stealing. Once Zero found out the shoes belonged to someone famous he got rid of them and that is how they ended up with Stanley.

The boys find that the warden of the camp has lost Zero's file and he is being kept there illegally. They also find the warden is looking for treasure in the desert and that is why they are digging holes. As it turns out the treasure has Stanley's families' name on it and it is legally theirs. Due to an investigation of the camp the boys are able to leave with the treasure. Stanley and Zero split the money and the camp is then shut down due to illegal activity by the staff. The camp is converted into a girl's scout camp and the boys live happily from that point on.
