In the 19th century, body-snatching was a common practice, but for Arthur Blake (Dominic Monaghan) and Willie Grimes (Larry Fessenden), it was more of a business. The duo went beyond simply selling cadavers to medical schools and sold them to a doctor, Quinn (Angus Scrimm), who specialized in the supernatural. One day, Blake is caught by the police and is interviewed by Father Duffy (Ron Perlman), who wants to hear his story.

Blake recounts how they started their body-snatching business and how they ended up in the supernatural trade. Their first job was to retrieve the body of a wealthy man who was to be buried with his treasure. Things go awry when they accidentally resurrect the corpse, who provides them with some vital information about the existence of the undead.

Soon after, they are approached by a group of men who specialize in the supernatural and offer to pay them double for any "unusual" bodies they can retrieve. Blake and Grimes agree, and they embark on a series of hair-raising adventures that include battles with zombies, vampires, and ghosts. Along the way, they are joined by Cornelius Murphy (Angus Scrimm), a doctor with a good heart, and Fanny Bryers (Brenda Cooney), a gypsy queen who helps them with her special powers.

As their business grows more complicated, Blake and Grimes find themselves entangled in a web of deceit and betrayal. They also discover that the supernatural creatures they have been dealing with are not as evil as they previously believed. Despite their precarious situation, they continue to lead their double lives, carrying out their dangerous work during the day and attending wakes during the night.
