Ilsa, She Wolf of the SS

"The most dreaded Nazi of them all!"

Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS is a film which was produced in 1974. It was released exclusively in the United States and to West Germany before the German reunification. The movie came out for viewers in October of 1975 for Halloween. It starred Dyanne Thorn as Ilsa, Gregory Knoph as Wolf, and Tony Mumolo as Mario. The plot is somewhat inspired by the stories of Ilsa Koch, a guard at Buchenwald concentration camp, and Irma Grese, another female guard at Auschwitz. Both of these women were members of the SS in Nazi Germany and were known particularly for their cruelty. Their histories provide the inspiration for the plot of the film.

Ilsa is involved in horrifying pseudoscience deemed "medical experiments" within the camp. Her ultimate goal for these experiments is to prove that women are better capable at handling pain then men are. She is also a sexual predator in that she chooses a different man every night and rapes him. She chooses to have him killed by the next day. Only one prisoner is able to withstand her and uses her weaknesses against her. Eventually she is killed by her boss.

The movie was filmed on the set of Hogan's Heroes after that show was cancelled. The set was destroyed purposely for a scene that required filming of the burning camp. It was used this way to save the studio money of later demolishing the old set.

Despite being called sadistic, the movie became a cult favorite and spawned sequels based around similar ideas. Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS is considered to be a reversal of many exploitation films of the 50s and 60s which showed Nazi SS soldiers preying on imprisoned young women.
