Watch In the Time of the Butterflies

"Women had their place. Hers was in the revolution."

In the Time of the Butterflies is a crime drama romance and historical film that was written by Judy and David Klass, based upon the novel by Julia Alvarez. Directed by Mariano Barroso, the film features Salma Hayek (who also produced it), Edward James Olmos and Lumi Cavazos. The Showtime film deals with three tragic sisters who were victims of the Leonidas Trujillo dictatorship resistance in the Dominican Republic. Minerva Mirabel (played by Salma Hayek) is a strong and tempestuous woman who leads her sisters Mate (played by Mia Maestro) and Patria (played by Lumi Cavazos). The Rafael Trujillo (played by Edward James Olmos) dictatorship occurs from 1930 to 1961.

Minvera is determined, despite the status of women in the country, to become a ferocious lawyer to fight the political system and gain justice for the people.

The film follows the movement after the women's father, (played by Fernando Becerril) is murdered. The story presumes that were it not for the fact that Minerva went to a ball in Santo Domingo and been disrespected, their father may not have been murdered.

Trujillo had tried to get his hands on Minerva as his mistress, however, she is disgusted. When she slaps him, it is obvious that this form of public humiliation will be retaliated. It is more obvious that major trouble is about to start and will continue indefinitely. Minerva’s boyfriend (played by Marc Anthony) like her, is a revolutionary for the cause. However, she later marries another man, Manolo (played by Demian Bichir).

Minerva engages in attempts to overthrow the dictator by passing out leaflets. Her activities quickly escalate into dangerous participation in gun stockpiling. With a form of brutal simplicity, the film dramatizes all of the political and personal tyranny that all of the characters endure. The stark choices that are faced by the characters are more than evident. The dictatorship is suffocating the citizens, who are helpless at the merciless hands of Trujillo. The ending is as to be expected, with plenty of tragedy for all concerned.
