Inside Llewyn Davis

Inside Llewyn Davis is a film directed, written and edited by Ethan and Joel Coen. The American comedy-drama stars John Goodman, Oscar Isaac, Justin Timberlake, and Carey Mulligan. In 2013, at the Cannes Film Festival it won the Grand Prix. The film takes place in 1961 and is about the life of a New York folk singer and songwriter. While the story is fictional, it is partially based on the life of Dave Van Ronk, a folksinger. Llewyn Davis (Isaac) is a struggling singer whose album is not selling, is broke and sleeping on his friends' couches, and his music partner recently committed suicide. If Llewyn's luck is not down enough, one night after a performance he is beaten by a man outside the club for heckling him the night before. Then Jean (Mulligan), Jim's (Timberlake) girlfriend tells Llewyn she is pregnant. She is afraid the baby is Llewyn's instead of Jim's and asks him for money to get an abortion. As the movie progresses, through performances, relationship issues, and money problems, Llewyn's story exemplifies the hardships and struggles of the life of a starving musician.
