Jefferson in Paris

"A powerful man torn between his love for one woman and his secret desire for another."

Jefferson in Paris dramatizes the life of widower Thomas Jefferson during the period that he served as an Ambassador to the court of the French King. It focuses upon his romantic liaisons with both a married woman, Maria Cosway, and his teenage slave girl, Sally Hemings. At the time the movie appeared, a few historians still believed Thomas Jefferson's claim that he had never fathered children with Sally Hemings. The movie, while not completely historically accurate, does clearly adopt the position that the future President carried on an affair with Sally Hemings. The film stars Nick Nolte as Thomas Jefferson.
