Lady Sings the Blues

The film, Lady Sings the Blues, starts in New York City as Billie was placed under arrest. He gets finger placed, put in a straight jacket, and placed in a cell. At this time he starts to flash backs to 1928, and he has a visit with a rapist. She leaves her door open and so the rapist is able to slip in the door. She ends up getting rapped. She gets to go to her mother's house after the incident, and she is brought to her mother's house with a police officer. The mother find a job for her daughter cleaning a brothel in Harlem. The owner of the brothel ends up giving her only a little bit of money.

Not too long after this, Billie and her show girls sneak into a bar; the owner of the bar tries to get her to leave but she won't leave. After he meets Louis McKay, the bar owner kicks her from the bar. She starts out by cleaning the floors of the brothel but she eventually becomes a prostitute. She does not last long as a prostitute and she eventually goes to an auditions as showgirl. She can't keep up with the other girls and so the owner tells her to quilt.

This is when she meets Jerry, and he becomes her best friend. He notices that she can sing, and so her singing career is launched. She goes back to the nightclub but this time its to sing. The audience doesn't like her and she gets booed off the stage. Louis gives her money at her debut concert. She signs the song "Them There Eyes;" however, he disappears when she goes on stage. The two of them like each other, and so they start to date each other.

Two other men discover talents, and their names are: Harry and Reg Hanley. They end up signing her, and taking her on the southern tour. She is trying to land a radio network gig. She becomes overwhelmed during the experience because she say an African-American man get lynched. You will have to watch the film to see how it ends as its full of action! There is plenty more to come that isn't mentioned here.
