A man named Paul is a middle-aged man from the United States who is the owner of a hotel. He is still grieving over the death of his wife who committed suicide. Paul meets a young woman from Paris who is engaged. Her name is Jeanne, and they are both interested in renting an apartment. When getting the apartment they decide to have a sexual relationship but also keep it secret. During this relationship they agree to not share any personal information including their names. One day Paul packs up and leaves. Jeanne is stunned and goes back to her former life. It is presumed that she got her own apartment and moved on.
Later on Paul finds Jeanne and tells her that he wants to continue their sexual relationship. He meets her at a tango bar and immediately reveals his name to her. Paul also tells Jeanne about the recent death of his wife. After hearing this and receiving this information, Jeanne then decides that she has no desire to continue the sexual relationship and therefore leaves. Despite Jeanne leaving, Paul follows her to her apartment and asks for her name. She pulls out a gun and tells him her name. Shortly after this she shoots him, and he later dies within minutes. Feeling shocked Jeanne reasons with herself by saying that the man was a stranger and that he tried to rape her. She planned on using this reasoning in case she was ever questioned by the authorities once they discover Paul's death.
