Layer Cake

The critically acclaimed cult classic Layer Cake is a British thriller based in the underworld of drug dealers and gangsters; the film shows both a serious and comic slant at the world of both small time and high level criminals in London, England. The film marks the directorial debut of Matthew Vaughn, the Englishman had previously been a successful producer of low budget British thrillers, such as Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Layer cake follows a short period in the life of an unnamed cocaine supplier to one of London's leading drug trafficking gangs; played by Daniel Craig the character is referred to as XXXX. The opening of the movie explains how XXXX has steered clear of becoming involved in the lives of the criminals on the street and remained locked away protected by a bodyguard known as Morty. All the dealings between the gang and XXXX are conducted through Gene, an assistant to the leader of the gang, Jimmy.

The complex plot of the movie begins to take shape at a lunch held by Jimmy which is attended by XXXX; Jimmy asks XXXX to help find the daughter of his associate, Eddie Temple who has escaped from a rehab center. In Holland a small time gangster known as The Duke steals a large number of drugs from a Serbian warlord and returns to England to sell the drugs to XXXX. A series of double crosses take place that reveal Jimmy to be a police informant and result in XXXX being crowned the new boss of Jimmy's drugs gang; the unnamed hero of Layer Cake rejects the leadership of the gang before a shocking ending takes place.

Layer Cake stars some of the most famous British actors of the 1990s and 2000s, including Sienna Miller, Dexter Fletcher and Michael Gambon. Daniel Craig followed Layer Cake with a number of James Bond movies.
