The film is was produced on a low budget and is considered part of Australia New Wave cinema. However, it is commonly referred to as solely a science-fiction film.

Gibson plays the title character of Max, a member of a highway police force at a time when the supply of the world's oil has been depleted leading to a decline in living standards and a breakdown in law and order. A vicious motorcycle gang takes advantage of the breakdown and wrecks havoc. The legal system cannot stop their carnage and, after murdering Max's fellow police officer and friend, they murder his wife and child. This causes Max to lose his mind and enact deadly revenge on the gang. At the end of the film, Max is a complete loner that has become as devastated as the world in which he lives in.

The film would go on to gross $100 million dollars world wide but was a failure at the box office in the United States. This is why the sequel, Mad Max 2, would be retitled The Road Warrior for its highly successful US release. In the US, the Australian accents were overdubbed to and replaced with American actors. It would not be for many years later that the original Australian actors' voices would be reinstated on US releases.

The film was the brainchild of James McCausland who was the creator of the original screenplay. Later, director George Miller and writer Byron Kennedy would rewrite the original script.

The film was a completely independent production as Miller and Kennedy would raise the $400,000 budget from various different sources. Considering how much money the film would earn world wide, it is among the biggest financial successes in the history of Australian cinema.
