Max Rose is a pianist who is 87 years old. Ater more than a half a century of happy wedded bliss, he learns that his wife was cheating on him throughout their marriage. This is a tragedy for him because she has always been with him through the good and bad times. While rummaging through Eva's things after she passed away, he finds love notes and a makeup compact that is engraved to Eva from a man named Ben in 1959.

Max, believing that his entire marriage was a sham, seeks to confront the man who stole Eva's affections from him and make his entire relationship and life a lie. This very intimate love story has the feel of a television movie. Max has strained relationship with his son Chris who wants to place him in a convalescent home. Max has a better relationship with his granddaughter, Annie. In the nursing home, Max realizes he is not indestructible and finds new friends who feel as bad as he does.
