Meteor

"There's No Place On Earth To Hide!"

Released by American International Pictures and boasting a star-studded cast including Sean Connery, Natalie Wood, Karl Malden, Brian Keith and Martin Landau, Meteor would end up being the boilerplate for a handful of space disaster genre thrillers to follow. At the heart of its plot is the story of a gigantic asteroid yanked out of the Asteroid Belt in space which is now on a collision course with Earth, but the script also interweaves a subplot dealing with cold war politics, a topic just heating up at the time. Ronald Neame directed Meteor, working off a screenplay by Edmund H. North and Stanley Mann, which kicks off with a voiceover narration about the events that have sent Orpheus, the five-mile-wide chunk of rock, hurtling towards our planet. Sean Connery stars as Dr. Paul Bradley, previously involved with NASA during a project code named Hercules which must now be re-imagined as a weapon to defend against the impending situation. Bradley is called in by Harry Sherwood (Karl Malden), an old friend at NASA, when it’s discovered the meteor is more than likely going to strike Earth at a disastrous velocity
