The film opens up with a magazine company that sells its issues by promoting exaggerating fantasy stories that they try to play off of as being real. The owner of the magazine hears about a lady in the Midwest that is said to be the landlord to an angel. He sends three members of his staff to investigate, because this crazy story is exactly the type of thing they go for. When they arrive there, a lady introduces them to Michael. She says he is an angel, because he has wings. However, other than the wings, he does not carry himself like an angel would. For starters, he smokes and drinks. Plus, he is obnoxious, and he smells.

Michael insists he is an angel. He goes on to explain that angels get to come to Earth to go on vacation a few times in their tenure. This is his last vacation, and he is living it to the fullest. After his landlord dies, they convince him to come to Chicago. He agrees, and over the course of the trip he gives a little bit away that shows he is trying to set up to of the staff members to fall in love. They are two people who do not believe in love, because they have had bad experiences in the past. The rest of the movie is Michael trying to complete his mission before he must leave.
