Child Temujin follows his father, Yesugei, to find his future wife. Temujin picks Borte, despite Yesugei preferring the Merkit tribe. Temujin promises to return to Borte in 5 years to marry her. Heading home, Yesugei is poisoned and tells Temujin that he is now "Khan." One of Yesugei's warriors, Targutai, demands to loot Yesugei's camp, but spares Temujin's life.

After a time, Temujin is found by "Jamukha." The boys become blood brothers. Targutai reappears but fails to capture Temujin. The film jumps to Temujin as a young man. Targutai snatches him yet again, with Temujin against escaping, reconnecting with Borte. Temujin's family is later attacked by the Chiledu-led Merkit. While escaping, Temujin is shot. Borte sends Temujin's horse homeward and is taken by Chiledu.

Temujin seeks out his Jamukha, who will help. A year later, the Merkit attack succeeds, Borte lives, with Chiledu's son, and Chiledu is dead. Two of Jamukha's soldiers join Temujin's side. Jamukha demands they return, but a Mongol warrior is free to choose leaders. Jamukha's brother, Taichar, is killed while trying to reclaim the horses. This sparks a war between friends, with Temujin quickly defeated and enslaved.

Temujin is sold to a Tangut man, despite warning from a monk. The monk senses great power within Temujin. Incarcerated, the monk begs Temujin to aid his monastery upon being freed. Temujin agrees after the monk delivers a note to Borte, but the monk dies. To reach Temujin, Borte becomes a merchant's concubine, siring a daughter. Reaching Tangut, she abandons the merchant and bribes the cell key away, heading homeward with her husband.

Upset with the Mongol society's decline, Temujin leaves his family and swears to make the Mongols respectable. While in the mountains, Temujin drafts a banner and prays. He gathers an army and wars on Jamukha, succeeding a decade later, with Targutai assisting Jamukha. A thunderstorm turns the battle, with Temujin triumphant. Temujin lets his blood brother survive, but executes cowardly Targutai. Temujin then becomes Genghis Khan.
