Monty Python's Life of Brian is a comedy directed by Terry Jones and written by the men of the comedy group Monty Python: Terry Jones, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Graham Chapman, Terry Gilliam, and Michael Palin. All the pythons have parts in the film, with Graham Chapman in the starring title role of Brian Cohen. The religious parody film is considered controversial and blasphemous and, as such, has previously been banned in several nations (which led to its popularity in countries where it was first released). While the rest of the world would come to revere and worship Jesus Christ, Brian had the misfortune to share a birthday with God's son, earning him throughout his life many mishaps of mistaken identity where he suffers for being confused for Jesus. The three Wise Men stop at Brian's stable to bring him gifts, thinking he is the Messiah. From there the mishaps in his life grow worse. Once he grows up, Brian is an optimist who hates the Roman rule of Judea. He falls for a revolutionary named Judith who is part of the People's Front of Judea, fighting against the Roman subjugation of her people. Brian joins the PFJ to earn Judith's attention, but this lands him in trouble instead. After a failed attempt to graffiti anti-Roman messages around the city, Brian is enlisted in a plot to kidnap Roman ruler Pilate's wife. Brian escapes arrest only to find himself worshiped as a messiah after an escape plan gains him a religious following that he can't seem to shake. People begin coming to him asking for miracles which he can't perform, and eventually the Romans arrest him and plan to crucify him. Judith convinces Pilate to release Brian, but others on crosses all claim to be him in order to gain freedom. After several more failed rescue attempts, Brian prepares himself for death as other crucified criminals sing cheerfully around him.
