My Friend Flicka

"A story from the heart of America...to thrill America's heart!"

Rather than a boy and his dog, it's a boy and his horse. A fifth grader returns from boarding school with poor grades. His parents own a horse farm, and the boy wants his own colt, but father is apprehensive about the idea because of the boy's continued irresponsibility. Dad relents, and the boy chooses a filly who immediately severely injures herself on a barbed wire fence when he tries to capture her to break her. The boy nurses Flicka back to health, but until she nearly dies from infection and he nearly dies from pneumonia. They become best friends.
