In the 1987 comedy film Nice Girls Don't Explode, high school student April (Michelle Meyrink) seems like any other teenage girl, with one exception: Her mother, June (Barbara Harris), has a condition which causes her to become dangerously explosive on emotional outbursts. As a result, June is overprotective and controlling of April, leading her to feel stifled and isolated.

While April tries to navigate being a teenager in the shadow of her explosive mother, she also must deal with the attention of two love interests: Her long-time crush, a jock named Chuck (William O'Leary), and a nerdy classmate who is more understanding of her situation.

As April tries to balance her desires for independence and a normal teenage experience while not setting off her mother's explosions, hilarity and chaos ensue. The film offers a fun and offbeat exploration of family dynamics and teenage love.

The performances in Nice Girls Don't Explode are enjoyable, with Meyrink bringing a relatable and sympathetic energy to April's struggles, and Harris fully committing to the over-the-top antics of June's explosive condition. The chemistry between Meyrink and O'Leary is also charming, with their awkward but sweet interactions adding levity to the film's more chaotic moments.

The film also benefits from the direction of Chuck Martinez, who manages to create a distinct and engaging tone whilst balancing the film's comedic and heartfelt elements. Additionally, the film's soundtrack, featuring artists such as The Smiths and The Stranglers, helps to create a distinct and memorable atmosphere.

Overall, Nice Girls Don't Explode is an enjoyable comedy which offers a unique and entertaining exploration of family dynamics and modern teenage life. It's a fun and charming film which still holds up well today, thanks to its strong performances and engaging storytelling.
