Watch Nijinsky

"Genius. Madman. Animal. God. Nijinsky."

Nijinsky is a biographical film that was released in the United States in 1980. It was directed by Herbert Ross, and it was written by Hugh Wheeler. Vaslav Nijinsky and his wife Romola receive screenwriting credits too. They are the subject of the movie, but Hugh Wheeler used Vaslav's personal journal and Romola's to write the script. The movie was produced by Hera Productions, and it was distributed by Paramount Pictures. It has a running time of 129 minutes. It stars George de la Peña and Lesli Browne as Vaslav and Romola, respectively. The supporting cast consists of Alan Bates, Alan Badel, Jeremy Irons, Carla Fracci, and Ronald Pickup.

The film looks into Vaslav Nijinsky careers and tries to figure out what drove him insane. It begins with a young Vaslav Nijinsky at the prestigious Ballets Russes. It is a premier ballet company in Russia. It is run by Sergei Diaghilev, played by Alan Bates. Vaslav has dreams of being a famous ballet dancer, but he also struggles with his sexuality. He forces himself to be heterosexual. Vaslav achieved one of his dreams by becoming the lead performer of Ballets Russes. He then becomes Sergei Diaghilev's lover.

As he becomes more famous, a young beautiful woman named Romola joins the company with her goal being to get Vaslav to fall in love with her. This all leads to Vaslav breaking off his love affair to Sergei and asking Romola to marry him. This series of events lead to him being let go by Ballets Russes. One of the reasons he was let go was he missed one of the company's performances while he was out getting married. He eventually is rehired by the company, but only after unfortunate circumstances of World War I. Around this time his health starts to fail and he is diagnosed with schizophrenia.
