Not Without My Daughter

"In 1984, Betty Mahmoody's husband took his wife and daughter to meet his family in Iran. He swore they would be safe. They would be happy. They would be free to leave. He lied."

Not Without My Daughter is the story of American Betty Mahmoody and her daughter Mahtob who must find a way to escape from her husband, Dr. Sayed Bozorg Mahmoody, also known as Moody, in Iran. The story takes place shortly after the Iranian hostage crisis. Betty is reluctant to travel to Iran, but is assured by Moody that he simply wishes to visit his family for two weeks. Then they'll return home to Michigan. As the time for the visit draws to a close, Moody informs Betty that they're staying in Iran permanently.

Betty is terrified, especially when Moody gets abusive. She learns that under Iranian law, she is now an Iranian citizen and can't leave the country without her husband's consent, and she has no control over Mahtob. The story details what Betty had to do to save herself and her daughter from being captive in a country where neither of them has any rights.
