"The extraordinary life story of Ray Charles."

Ray is a dramatic film that focuses on the life and career of singer and piano player Ray Charles. Ray is played by Jamie Foxx. The film starts with the young Ray trying to make it in the music business. He meets a young producer named Quincy Jones. He hits the road, playing in in small bars and clubs. Ray lost his vision as a child so his talent is even more amazing.

Ray soon learns that trying to make it in the entertainment business is hard and people are always trying to cheat you. Some unscrupulous bar owners try to take advantage of his blindness so Ray soon learns to demand that people pay him with single dollar bills. That way he can be sure the count is accurate.

The dangers of the music life soon get to Ray. He begins to struggle with an addiction to heroin. His wife Della is pregnant and when she finds out that Ray is using drugs, she kicks him out of their house. Ray begins to indulge more heavily in drugs and starts having affairs on the road.

While his personal life is going through drama, his professional career is blossoming. Ray is becoming more and more popular. His concerts bring controversy however. He is criticized for having songs and movements that some people feel is overtly sexual. Segregation is also an issue in the country and Ray even becomes banned from his home state of Georgia for refusing to make black people sit in a separate section when they come to his concerts. Ray eventually makes the decision to get off drugs and go to rehab. He becomes clean and the film ends when Georgia decides to apologize to the singer and make his song “Georgia on my Mind” the official state song.
