"Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions."

Robin Longstride, played by Russel Crowe, is an archer in King Richard's army. The movie breaks the canon of previous Robin Hood tales by having Robin at odds with Richard and imprisoned by him. Richard dies in the first act of the film when shot through the neck by an arrow. Upon Richard's death, Robin and a few friends free themselves, desert the army, and return home to England. On their journey back, they find a dying knight, Robert Loxley, who asks Robin to return a sword to his father. Robin agrees.

Robin assumes Loxley's identity and upon arriving in England is chosen to inform the Royal family of the King's death. He witnesses the coronation of King John while keeping up his ruse. King John's first decree is to send his trusted lieutenant Sir Godfrey north to collect harsh taxes. Unbeknownst to John, Sir Godfrey is a French agent loyal to King Philip of France.

Robin returns the sword to Sir Walter Loxley, Robert's father. Surprisingly, Sir Walter wants Robin to continue impersonating his son. He knows that he will die soon and his lands will return to the crown if he has no heir. Sir Walter dies later in the film during a raid upon his farm.

Meanwhile, Sir Godfrey has stirred up the northern nobles against King John. They demand that he sign the Charter of the Forest which grants the nobles certain rights. Godfrey's treachery is revealed when news of invasion by France is imminent. King John signs the charter so the northern nobles will help him repel the invaders.

During the subsequent battle which takes place on the shores of England. Robin emerges a hero. Though victorious in large part due to Robin's heroics, King John grows petty and declares him an outlaw.
