Ryan's Daughter

"A story of love...set against the violence of rebellion"

Ryan's Daughter is a British production based on the novel Madame Bovary that relocates the action to the Southern coast of Ireland during World War I. Despite being made by legendary British director David Lean, director of Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago the film received poor reviews that have turned over time to become more positive. The 195 minute film was completed over a long and difficult shoot, which included the cast and crew waiting for almost a year for a storm deemed severe enough for Lean to film one of the movie's most dramatic scenes. During the storm scene Leo McKern who plays Tom Ryan almost drowned as he spent time in the Ocean during the scene.

The complex story focuses on the characters of Tom Ryan, a British informant and local pub owner and his daughter Rosy Ryan, played by Sarah Miles. The character of Rosy is shown throughout the first scenes of the movie finding it difficult to remain in the small, isolated village of Kirrary. Hoping to find excitement she marries a local schoolteacher Charles Shaughnessy, played by Robert Mitchum and quickly realizes she has made a mistake in the marriage.

In the meantime Rosy's father Tom is revealed to be a British informant telling the authorities secrets of the local Irish nationalists who frequent his pub. Rosy embarks on an affair with a British officer Major Rudolph Doryan, played by Christopher Jones that is discovered by her husband and the mute Michael. The arrest of a group of local nationalists who have stolen a cache of weapons is blamed on Rosy after Michael reveals her affair to a group of villagers; Rosy is stripped and beaten by the local people as her Father watches and cannot bring himself to admit his actions as an informant. Affected by shell shock, the end of his affair with Rosy and her treatment by the locals Rudolph kills himself with some explosives revealed to him by Michael.

Sir John Mills won an Oscar for his role as Michael despite never speaking during the course of Ryan's Daughter.
