"Salinger" is the historical recount of author J.D. Salinger's days in self imposed confinement. After having risen to stardom with the quintessential classic American novel, "Catcher In the Rye," Salinger became more adverse to public attention and scrutiny. He eventually became a recluse and went into hiding in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Interviewing celebrities and member's of his inner circle for the very first time, "Salinger" explores the work he was dedicated to in the last half of his life, as well as how he spent his time when not writing. Salinger's reactions to the many scandals that involved him after his decision to leave the public eye are also discussed. With interviews from Oscar and Pulitzer Prize winners, "Salinger" also looks at the depth of influence his work had on other artists.

The film also reveals the future of Salinger's extensive work and what will become of the numerous volumes he wrote while in seclusion. Also looked at is the connection between "A Catcher in the Rye" and the list of murderers who either referenced it or had it on them during their crimes.
