"What the Dickens have they done to Scrooge?"

Scrooge is a faithful adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens story, A Christmas Carol with musical numbers interspersed throughout the movie. Albert Finney takes on the title role of Ebeneezer Scrooge, the elderly miser, despite being only 34 at the time of the movie's release; the role of Scrooge's deceased business partner Jacob Marley is played by British stage and screen legend Alec Guinness. Director Ronald Neame's version of the Christmas classic was nominated for four Oscars at that year's ceremony; Albert Finney did win a Golden Globe Award for his performance as Scrooge. Following its release as a movie this musical version of A Christmas Carol was adapted for the stage and is often performed at the London Palladium over the Christmas period; Tommy Steele is most often associated with the role of Scrooge on stage.

The movie opens with the familiar story of Scrooge working as late as possible on Christmas Eve with his loyal employee Bob Cratchit, played by David Collings. After visits from various family members and people seeking charitable donations form Scrooge the penny pinching ways of the miser become evident. Returning to his home Scrooge is confronted by the face of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley in place of his door knocker; Scrooge refuses to believe he has seen Marley's ghost until it appears to him as he prepares to sleep for the night. Ebeneezer Scrooge is then warned he shall be visited by three ghosts who will attempt to show him the error of his ways and prevent him being taken to hell. Throughout the night Scrooge is visited by the ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future; the spirit of Christmas Future scares Scrooge by sending him to hell to visit Marley who works as a clerk. Finally, Scrooge changes his ways and becomes the man loved by all of London; a large musical number ensues to end the movie with happy versions of the songs performed throughout the film.
