"The film they tried to ban! A brutal story of today."

The film entitled Scum is about a young man called Carlin who is taken to a borstal institution for his unruly behavior. The film portrays Carlin’s activities while at the institution and also the weaknesses of the borstal system. The film starts when Carlin and two other boys arrive at the institution. Carlin is there because he is blamed for stealing scrap metal whereas his brother is the guilty one. His other two mates are Angel and Davis, Angel is guilty of stealing a car while Davis is there because he tried to run away from an open institution. Angel and Davis are put in private rooms while Carlin goes to a general dormitory. Carlin decides to maintain a quiet life and avoid any form of attention towards him. A few days after he is accused of attacking a warder and is transferred to another dormitory. There he meets Archer a quiet but intelligent and mischievous guy who uses non violent methods to annoy the warders and other workers and make life miserable for them. A young man called Banks who is the most troublesome inmate invites Carlin to have a fight with him. His intention is to beat and disgrace Carlin in front of the other guys. Carlin ignores his request and focuses on settling in his new dormitory. One day Banks and his friends attack and beat Davis for no reason. Carlin becomes very angry about it and decides to take revenge on Banks. He attacks Banks in the bathroom and succeeds in beating him very well. He then becomes the leader in all the wards and under his reign life becomes more comfortable and non violent for the inmates especially the young and weaker boys. The warders develop interest in Carlin and he convinces them to transfer him from a dormitory to a room. At the end Davis commits suicide, Carlin organizes a riot after which the governor decides to amend the policies of the institution.
