Early on in the film, Rainey is confronted by John Turturro's character, John Shooter, who accuses him of plagiarizing a novel of Shooter's called Sowing Season. Shooter leaves the manuscript with Rainey, who originally dismisses the idea and Shooter as crazy and throws it away. When Mort Rainey's cleaning lady mistakes the manuscript for Rainey's she retrieves it from the garbage. Rainey's curiosity is piqued and he decides to read through it. The novel is eerily similar to Rainey's own novel, Secret Window.
Upon further investigation, Rainey discovers that his own story was written three years before Shooter's and confronts him with this revelation. After being accosted, John Shooter offers Rainey a chance to prove his claims or suffer the consequences. To show that he means business, Shooter kills Rainey's dog and begins a reign of terror over him to force him into providing proof of the story's originality.
Throughout Secret Window Mort Rainey is terrorized by John Shooter at every turn. Wherever Mort goes to find proof of his story's legitimacy, John Shooter is always one step ahead. Mort enlists the help of his literary agent and his ex wife. But the more people he involves in this mess, the more Shooter messes with him.
The mind games Shooter plays cause Rainey to have a mental breakdown of sorts toward the end of the film. But Secret Window is not what it seems. An unexpected plot twist changes everything and creates an even more sinister tone to the movie, as Rainey is not what he seems.
Secret Window is available to watch and stream, buy on demand at Amazon, Vudu, Google Play, FandangoNow, iTunes, YouTube VOD online.
