One day, a strange, symbolic crop circle appears in the cornfield. Bo wakes her father stating that a monster is lingering outside her window. Graham checks his daughter's window and sees the outline of someone standing on the roof of their nearby barn. Alarmed, Graham calls on Merrill, and the brothers run screaming around the premises in an attempt to scare off the unidentified figure. The brothers presume it was Lionel Pritchard, the town's notorious prankster.
The following day, the town's sheriff visits the Hess' residence to investigate what happened. During their chat, Bo interrupts them, saying that there are reports on TV about various symbolic crop circles appearing all across the globe. The next day, the family visits the town for supplies.
At night, their dog barks consistently facing the cornfield. Graham checks the cornfield with a flashlight in hand. He shouts that the intruders are wasting their time and walks back towards the house. Before entering the house, he hears a loud sound. He finds a horrific green leg within the cornfield and runs back home horrified and confused by what he saw. Soon after, the family watches their TV as news of various unidentified lights hovering around Mexico City is reported.
As the story progresses, Graham and his family are attacked by the aliens. They end up killing one when they find out its weakness is water.
