Watch Sophie's Choice

"Between the innocent, the romantic, the sensual, and the unthinkable. There are still some things we have yet to imagine."

Set in the US after World War II, "Sophie's Choice" gives voice to the nation's shock at the horror of Nazi Concentration Camps. The narrator is Stingo, played by Peter MacNicols, an aspiring Southern writer. Stingo moves into a boarding house and quickly befriends his two neighbors, Sophie (Meryl Streep) and Nathan (Kevin Kline). Both Nathan and Sophie are haunted by the specter of the Holocaust. Her numbered tattoo, marks Sophie as a Holocaust survivor, but neither Nathan nor Stingo know the true horrors she experienced.

As an American Jew, Nathan is obsessed with efforts to capture escaped Nazis and Nazi collaborators. He is plagued by the idea that the woman he loves might be one of the hated collaborators. "How is it that you survived when so many others died?" He continually asks her, but she has no answer.

As Stingo's friendship with the tortured couple deepens, more secrets are revealed including Nathan's worsening mental illness and the truth of Sophie's pro-Nazi father. It is plain that Stingo is slowing falling in love with the mysterious, tragic Sophie. Stingo's feelings are complicated by the genuine friendship and admiration he feels for Nathan.

Throughout the movie more and more secrets of Sophie's previous life come to light. With each revelation of secrets and lies told to protect secrets, Nathan grows increasingly angry and unstable. Stingo can tell there is still something Sophie is holding back, something so dark that she must hide it even from herself.
