Surrogates

"How do you save humanity when the only thing that's real is you?"

In Surrogates, the proliferation of remote-controlled bodies has allowed society to remain virtual shut-ins. These "surrogate" bodies' operators cannot be damaged or suffer pain inflicted upon the surrogate, so people rarely leave home. FBI agent Greer finds himself struggling with his wife; she prefers to use a surrogate while Greer prefers to physically interact with reality. Greer and partner, Peters, are examining the surrogate murders of two humans. One of the victims, a Jarid Canter, is the son of the inventor of surrogates. The agents surmise that a new weapon was utilized, one which overloads a surrogate and kills the operator. After Greer tries to arrest the culprit, named Strickland, Strickland uses the weapon and hurts Greer while escaping him. Greer winds up falling into an anti-surrogate area, where a mob destroys his surrogate. The group's leader, The Prophet, kills Strickland and reclaims his technology. Greer learns from a higher up that the company making surrogates also made the weapon for the government. However, the initial plans did not include injuring operators so all but one prototype was destroyed. Peters is murdered, with an unknown person controlling her surrogate. Greer is told that his superior gave the weapon to Strickland to assassinate Dr. Canter but Jarid was killed instead; using one of his dad's surrogates. The Prophet gives the weapon to Peters, but it shot. In this moment, the Prophet is revealed to be a surrogate, operated by Dr. Canter. Greer heads to the doctor's home and finds Peters being operated by him as well. Dr. Canter uses his weapon to kill Stone and upload the weapon's virus to all surrogates. Overconfident, he unplugs from Peters and takes a poison pill. Greer heroically operates Peters and reworks the virus so that operators will be unharmed. People slowly leave their homes, leery and disoriented. Greer heads home and hugs his wife in physical form, as a news copter shares the event.
