The Amityville Horror

"For God's Sake, Get Out!"

"The Amityville Horror" is a movie released in 1979 by the independent film company, American International Pictures. The movie is based on the book of the same name written by Jay Anson in 1977. The story was advertised to be based on the real-life events a family encountered after purchasing and moving into a "haunted house" in the Pennsylvania suburbs. The book cover even contains the words "A True Story."

"The Amityville Horror" starred actors James Brolin, Margot Kidder, and Rod Steiger. James Brolin and Margot Kidder played George and Kathy Lutz, the new homeowners. Rod Steiger plays Father Delaney who begins his role by attempting to bless the home for the Lutzes. It quickly appears the house or its spirits do not want the house blessed. Father Delaney is met with strange occurrences (such as a room full of flies) and even sickness while attempting the blessing. The Father continues to encounter these evil spirits outside of the house in his own church.

The Lutz family is very soon aware that the house is not quite right. The house is very cold all of the time, and George Lutz's efforts to warm it up with fire are futile. Kate Lutz is concerned that her young daughter has an imaginary friend who seems to be more than imaginary, and family members begin to get injured under bizarre circumstances in and out of the house. The Lutzes start to dig a little deeper into the house's dark history and are not at all comforted with what they find. Eventually, the Lutz family flees from the house and leaves the evil far behind them.

The movie has spawned eight follow-on movies over 20 years and a remake of the original in 2005.
