The Black Balloon

"Sometimes it's hard to be the odd one in."

The world of autism and living on the autism spectrum is a very hard life to deal with. It's even harder for the family members who try everything they possibly can to be able to communicate with them, appreciate them as the person they are, and understand their family member who often times does things that make no sense in the everyday world. It's even harder when you're the sibling of an autistic person and all you want to do is be considered normal and have just as much attention as your brother gets for all of his antics. This is the premises of The Black Balloon. The film that won the best feature-length film in the Generation 14plus category at the Berlin International Film Festival. It depicts the life of a fifteen year old who must take care of his severely autistic brother when his mother is put in the hospital for pregnancy complications. With the help of a love interest, an absent father, and his brother; Thomas finds there is more to being a brother than simply dealing with his sibling and wishing his brother was more normal. This is a film about family and acceptance.
