“Blues Brothers” is a film that is a hybrid of a comedy and musical. It was the first feature film to feature characters originally portrayed on the television show “Saturday Night Live”. The movie stars John Belushi and Dan Akyroyd as Jake and Ellwood Blues. The Blues brothers are former blues singers who are reunited after Jake is released from prison. The story is dotted with musical numbers including a number of heavyweight cameos by real life musicians such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, John Lee Hooker and Cab Calloway.

The movie starts with Ellwood picking up Jake from the prison in Joliet, Illinois. Jake had been locked up for three years and the brothers catch up. Ellwood explains that he sold their Cadillac to buy a new “Blues Mobile” which is a former police cruiser.

The brothers visit the place where they grew up. It is a catholic orphanage. During their visit they are told that the orphanage is in debt and in risk of closing. The brothers make it their mission to raise funds and save the orphanage from foreclosure.

Jake and Ellwood hatch a plan to reunite with their band mates to earn money. They travel around to attempt to convince some very unwilling members to join them for a reunion tour. Their trip is interrupted by a memorable police chase scene that races through a shopping mall.

Once the band is back together they have trouble securing any paying music gigs. They stumble upon a country bar and introduce themselves as the house band. After initially receiving a poor reception at the bar they win the crowd over by abandoning their blues music for performances of “Stand by Your Man” and the theme from “Rawhide”.

The Blues Brothers band eventually is able to book a job that will pay them the money they need. Their multiple enemies that they have incurred and the police do their best to stop their concert.
