The Brothers Karamazov

"Three brothers, one spiritual and living at a monastary, one a gambler, and one an intellectual, work out their problems in 19th century Russia."

The Brothers Karamazov is one of the great novels of 19th century Russian literature. It is usually regarded as Fyodor Dostoevsky’s best work. The story is about a family patriarch named Fyodor Karamazov and his three sons Dmitri, Ivan, and Alyosha. The father is brutal, vulgar and rich. He has a troubled relationship with all three sons. The story covers a wide range of themes ranging from religion to socialism, tradition versus modernity, and altruism versus egoism. This is a 1958 film version of the story. It is very difficulty to capture the substance of the novel in a film, but the movie captures the essence and spirit of Dostoevsky’s novel.
