The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari, a silent, German Expressionist film, opens on Francis in a mental institution telling his story of how he and a woman he points out as Jane, his fiancée came to be there. Their trouble started when he and his friend Alan see Dr Caligari and his main attraction, a somnambulist called Cesare, at a carnival. When Cesare’s prediction of Alan’s death is proved right, Francis and the fiancée have their suspicions that Cesare murdered him at Caligari’s bidding. But Francis’s attempt to prove his friend’s murder only leads to more questions in an increasingly surreal looking world.
