This is a story of Kate, who lives in a new society, the fictional Republic of Gilead. Within this society the pollution has rendered 99% of the population sterile. In this society the females that are still able to conceive children are considered "blessed." Kate and her husband see how things are going, and not wanting to be forced into this cult they along with their daughter try and flee to Canada. However, they are caught, Kate's husband is executed and her daughter is taken away. Kate is forced into the society and to become a concubine to infertile couples. Kate is placed with a couple. The wife dislikes her right away and wants a child. She holds Kate in contempt because she cannot conceive. However, there is an unforeseen problem in this society of the Republic of Gilead. Not only are the women sterile, but the men as well.
