The Human Stain

"How far would you go to escape the past?"

The Human Stain is a drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman. This is an R rated movie with adult and sexual themes. Anthony Hopkins plays Coleman Silk who is a disgraced college professor. Being accused of racism and being forced to leave his job, Coleman also has to come to terms with the death of his wife. While leaving campus Coleman runs into Faunia Farley who is played by Nicole Kidman. Needing a lift home, Coleman takes her to her apartment and Faunia invites him in. From there they engage in a sexual relationship that further tarnishes Coleman's image at the college since Faunia is one of the campus janitors.

Coleman begins to fall in love with Faunia and wants to take care of her. In doing so he find out that her children burned to death in a fire that she blames herself for. Faunia's ex-husband, a war veteran with a mental problem, threatens her and Coleman that he will hurt them if they stay together.

Fearing for Coleman's safety she tries to end their relationship and play it off as just sexual when Coleman refuses. He reveals to her that they are not that dissimilar with their life stories and tells her of the fact that even though he appears to be caucasian, he is actually an african american boy from a jewish family. He use to be a boxer but, once learning that he could get farther in life if people believed he was white, he disassociated himself from his family and when joining the military lied on his application when choosing race.

From there he continued to live his life as a white man and never even told his late wife the truth about himself. That is why he was so hurt when being accused of racism because although he denied that part of himself he never looked down on any race due to his own origins.

After his confession Faunia and Coleman decide to remain together but, before they can become happy again, they are murdered by Faunia's ex husband. It is after his death that Coleman's colleagues admit they were wrong and that he was indeed a good man.
