"The Iron Lady" is the fictionalized biography of former Prime Minister Margaret portrayed her later years living in London, after the death of her husband Denis Thatcher. This film includes flashbacks from her youth in Grantham, England as the daughter of a grocery store owner and the beginning of her strugle to rise above her lower middle class station for a better life. Her relationship with her mother was shaky, when Margaret announced that she was won a scholarship to the University of Oxford the relationship between mother and daughter became more strained.

Beginning her political career was a challenge in itself, because the Tory Party in the late 70's and early 80's was almost completely dominated by men in the House of Commons. Building friendships with political insiders like Airey Neave help cement her own position in the British Government. However, when Neave was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army, this blatant act motivates Thatcher to run for election for the seat of Prime Minister. After campaigning agressively across the country she won the election in 1981 as proof of her dogged determination. When the Falklands War broke out with Argentina she was determined to keep the islands in British hands and was planning to fight agressively to do it.

Thatcher proved herself to be a world figure by the late 1980's during Britain's economic boom. Yet, by 1990 she began to lose touch with her political allies that lead to her resignation. Hard times followed when Denis Thatcher passed away leaving Margaret a widow after nearly thirty years of marriage. As she got older her strugles against dementia became ever more aparent to the public and her former politcal collegues.

When being reviewed by critics there was a controversy on the depiction of Thatcher in her later years. However, the film was nominated for two Academy Awards that included an Academy Award for Best Actress for Meryl Streep in a leading role. Also an Academy Award for Best Makeup in a production.
