The Long Goodbye is a neo-noir film that was released in 1973. The film’s main character is a strange, poverty riddled, jokester who is also a private eye. He ends up involved in a case where he has to investigate the disappearance of his friend. This began as the result of him driving his friend to Mexico, having his suicide reported, and him being told that he owes the Mexican mob the money that his friend also stole. He then takes on another case where he has to find the drunkard-writer husband of a beautiful woman, and then becomes friends with the husband after he returns. Finally, the detective returns to Mexico in order to settle the debt, and to pay vengeance on his friend who saddled him with a blood-stained debt. These actions demonstrate what the substance of the seemly lazy detective is really made out of.

The Long Goodbye was originally written as a novel by Raymond Chandler, and was adapted for film by Leigh Brackett. The film was directed by Robert Altman. The lazy detective is played by Elliott Gould. The film also features Nina van Pallandt, Sterling Hayden, and Mark Rydell.
