The Majestic

"Sometimes your life comes into focus one frame at a time."

The Majestic stars Jim Carrey as a young man who is mistaken for a war hero named Luke Trimble. He is actually a screenwriter named Peter Appleton, who accidentally drives his car off a bridge while drunk. He wakes up with amnesia and discovers he is in a small town called Lawson. A man claiming to be his father owns the local theater, which is named the Majestic. Harry Trimble's son Luke went off to war several years before and ended up missing. The doctor who treats Peter for amnesia when he is found, is the first person to believe he is the missing Luke Trimble.

Peter, who is confused as to his true identity, decides to go along with the belief of the people in the town and takes up residence with Harry as his son. The Majestic, once a grand theater, is now in disarray. Harry's dream is to see the Majestic return to its former glory. He has high hopes for restoring it now that his son Luke has returned. Peter pitches in and helps Harry rebuild the theater so people will start attending movies again. The townspeople get excited about having Luke home and getting the theater back in good condition. After the renovations are complete, Luke and Harry set up a day for their grand opening.

One day while watching an old movie at the Majestic, Peter regains his memory. He remembers he is a screenwriter who lost a major deal with a studio. Peter has every intention of informing Harry and the others of who he is when Harry has a heart attack. Not wanting to upset him, Peter decides to postpone telling him the truth. The reality is, that when the town believed their missing war hero had returned it gave them hope for rebuilding their town and their relationships. Even when Peter finally does admit to not being Luke, the town still accepts him.
