The Manson Family is a crime drama film that blends a documentary style with a fictional story line. Jack Wilson is host of a popular TV series known as Crime Scene, which undertakes an examination of the various crimes committed by members of a group of individuals in the 1960s known as The Manson Family who came under the influence of mastermind Charles Manson. This film recounts the early days when members of the group which later became known as The Manson Family first encountered one another while living in a commune-style setting on a property known as Spahn Ranch in the San Fernando Valley section of greater Los Angeles.

The film explores Charles Manson's frustrated attempts to become a success in the music business, the various heinous crimes committed by members of The Manson Family, in particular the murder of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and her friends in her Beverly Hills mansion, and the resulting legal proceedings after Manson and his followers are arrested.
