The Moth Diaries is directed by Mary Harron, who also directed American Psycho, and is written based on the bestselling novel by Rachel Klein with the same title. Rebecca (played by Sarah Bolger), whose father's suicide is still reeling in her life, is enrolled in an uptight and elite boarding school for girls. When she comes to her new-found school, Rebecca becomes friends with the popular girl in school, Lucy (played by Sarah Gadon).

Though her friendship appears to be unbreakable, the arrival of a new student, Ernessa (played by Lily Cole), causes troubles between the two and may break the friendship apart. Though her friendship may be in trouble, she must focus on school and read the assigned book from her teacher, Mr. Davies. The assignment is to read a Gothic novel, Carilla. The novel begins to give Rebecca a glimpse into her suspicions of Ernessa.

Rebecca believes that there is something off about Ernessa. Rebecca believes she is a vampire, and regardless of the many deaths that have begun to take place, she tries to share her concerns. The concerns she has, however, are not viewed with open arms and are considered to be that of a jealous friend mad that her friend has made another.

While more bodies begin to appear, Rebecca decides it is time to get some answers and takes matters into her own hands. She will not stand by any longer to watch idly as victims begin to become higher in number with each passing night. Her determination and strong character traits make her the heroine in this film as she tries to get others to see the truth of Ernessa and her dark secrets. Rebecca will stop at nothing to get her friend to see the truth and make these deaths to stop.
